Topp's Last Stand
by Brian Schofield
28 April 2007

The Nonoy Gonzales vs Gavin Topp middleweight fight on the Gold Coast on Friday, April 27 was a disgrace. Referee Phil Austin, and the cornermen of Topp, could almost be charged with being accomplices to attempted murder.

From the second round on, Topp copped punishment from Nonoy that made Custer’s Last Stand look like a scuffle in a Day Care Centre.
Fighters need to be saved from themselves when pride kicks in. Topp would have accepted a stoppage after a couple of rounds but unfortunately the ref and corner men could endure a lot more. They let it go till round six.

Topp was Australian light-middlewewight champion. He gave the game away for five years. Now at 34 he is not the same boxer, courage apart..

BRIAN SCHOFIELD is seen on Graduation Day at the University of Queensland in 2001. He took a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Literature and Communications. The Melbourne fans knew boxer-fighter Schofield as "the Doveton Demon." He won the Australian junior-lightweight title from Dennis Talbot in six rounds in 1983 and retired as champion. Schofield is a personal trainer on the Gold Coast.
