Five firing at Arafura

FIVE Australian boxers are moving up as the Arafura Games boxing enters semi-finals in Darwin tonight (Wednesday, May 16).

In middleweight (75 kg) division, Nathan Carroll (Aust Aborigine) outpointed Sam Bosma (ACT) 20-13 on night 2 (Tues). Carroll meets Tim Parker (SA) tonight.

At 69 kg, Ged O’Mahony (ACT) and Sam Leone (Aborigine) fight separate welterweight semis.

Light-welterweight Dave Biddle (SA) beat Joel Hutchison (Aborigine), 47-33, and faces Pau Paulus (MAS) tonight. Aaron Reid (ACT) in the other 64 kg semi, opposes Cameron Hammond (Aborigine).

Victorian lightweight Will Tomlinson, cheered by the locals as a former Northern Territory rep, defeated Adonis Cabalquinto (Phi), 46-25.

On Monday opening night, lightweight Ryan Stinson (NSW) won on the whistle rd 3 against Jeff Koredong (PNG). But next night a jaded Stinson met whistle loss in rd 2 against Mark Pevinsky (ACT).

Featherweight Joel Brunker (NSW) scored a powerful win in 57 kg (outscored rd 3) over Eddy Kalai (MAS).

Brad Hore (Qld) finally quit the flyweights he ruled for years and beat Otrel Baptisto (TLS) in their bantamweight (54 kg) match.

Flyweight Jimmy Ceapa (NSW) carried high hopes after winning recent Oceania Gold. But Afri Lubis ran away with the points on still-junior Jimmy, 64-38.

AIS boxers abroad

Australia’s Number One team, the Australian Institute of Sport full-time boxers, are off to Europe, with their primary target the Commonwealth Titles (NOT Cw Games) in Liverpool, England.

The touring troupe are Daniel Beahan (91+), Brad Pitt (91), Jarrod Fletcher (75), Todd Kidd (64), Luke Jackson (57) and Luke Boyd (54 kg).
