Aussie 8 in Arafura finals

Australian fighters are digging for gold in eight weight divisions of the Arafura Games boxing week in Darwin tonight (Friday).

Mostyn Niemann (SA) meets New Zealand’s Yamiko Chinula in heavyweight final. Mat Corbett (NSW) takes on Sam Woods (NT) for light-heavyweight honours.

In middleweight Tim Parker (SA) fights the final against Deacon Henry (NZ). Tim beat Nathan Carroll (Aust Aborigine), to gain the final berth against Deacon Henry (NZ). Carroll had beaten Sam Bosma (ACT) before losing to the Deacon.

Welterweight Ged O’Mahony, the Games veteran from ACT, won his 69 kg semi-final in the opening round, and faces Farkhan Mohdhaven (MAS). The Farkhan fighter already won two, including Queensland Aborigine Sam Leone.

Light-welterweight Dave Biddle (SA) has two wins already - Joel Hutchison (Aborigine) and Pau Paulus (MAS). His final opponent, Cameron Hammond (Aborigine) scored a big chalk up taking the points from Aaron Reid (ACT).

Will Tomlinson of Victoria contests the lightweight gold against Mark Pevinsky (ACT) after they scored a win apiece.

At featherweight, Joel Brunker (NSW) in his second match meets Ani Antoni (INA).

Bantamweight final sees seasoned Brad Hore (Qld) in his second match against Awang Kati (MAS).

Our 51 kg rep from NSW, Jimmy Ceapa, the Oceania champ, was unexpectedly eliminated on Tuesday by the Indonesian flyweight, Afri Lubis. Afri is hot favourite for the final with a Papua New Guinea fly that Ceapa beat in Samoa.

Our best light-flyweight, Steve Sutherland (Vic) is too young to contest the Arafura 48 kgs.
