Sultan unseats asthmatic Shannon

WBO Heavy Title : three shifts in a year

Smash shots by DAVID MARTIN WARR. Shannon Briggs, the big black Brooklyn heavyweight, got the inside hit, in two of three. But the Russian Sultan threw a lot more, and won WBO crown on the Boardwalk.

Brooklyn giant, Shannon Briggs lost his WBO Heavyweight Title to Sultan Ibragimov of Russia on a 12-round points decision in the Boardwalk Hall of Atlantic City on Saturday, June 2.

Briggs ceded the title at this, his first defence, on the judges'
cards by 10 points, 6 and 2 points.

He'd won the title last November from another Russian, Sergei Lyakhovich, stopping Sergei with only seconds left in the 12th round.
Retina damage cost the established WBO king, Lamon Brewster the title to Lyakhovich on points in April 2006.

Briggs, an asthmatic, boxed sporadically against the more active 'Sultan of Swing,' said the New York Post.
