Now Guzman throws in his hand
By DAVE WELLINGS |
The hand of fate has intervened more than once in the boxing career of Michael Katsidis. Now the injured left hand of Joan Guzman has caused him to withdraw from his proposed challenge to Katsidis. The bout was to have been shown live in Australia by SkySport but HBO has now scrapped the entire May 26 show.
Cancellations, changes of venue and problems with visas have punctuated an otherwise well-scripted career of the unbeaten Toowoomba lightweight. His trainer/manager, Brendan Smith said of this latest cancellation
"I’m not really surprised. I’m not saying Guzman’s not hurt but I believe he should have to front the California Boxing Commission where his injury can be confirmed by an independent doctor. I believe a lot of fighters are continuing to step around Michael, well aware of his punching power."
Guzman, from the Dominican Republic, has won WBO titles at featherweight and junior-lightweight. His manager, Jose Nunez, says Guzman suffered tissue damage to his left wrist and little finger during a sparring session on Tuesday. The team’s doctor recommended two weeks rest for the hand.
The Australian contingent will remain in the USA while a new opponent if sought but Rocky Katsidis already knows who he wants - dual World Champion, Juan Diaz!
