Katsidis
gambles in Las Vegas
By DAVE WELLINGS |
Toowoomba’s Michael Katsidis will finally
make his American debut on July 21 when he meets
Czar Amonsot at the Mandalay Bay Casino Resort
in Las Vegas.
The World Boxing Organisation has assured
its Interim lightweight champion that he will
challenge dual world title holder, Juan Diaz
after both boxers have had one more bout.
Amonsot is experienced for a 21-year-old.
His record of 18-2-1 includes bouts in Korea
and Indonesia, as well as his in his native
Philippines.
Czar’s two losses, however, were both
by stoppage, revealing that the young southpaw
is not bullet-proof. His team will be aware
that 20 of Rocky’s 22 victories have come
inside the distance.
To date the boxing career of 26-year-old Katsidis
has resembled an SAS obstacle course . . but
his American backers have been impressed by
his attitude and top class sparring.
Taking on the Amonsot fight, so close to a
world title opportunity, is clearly a gamble,
but Las Vegas is surely the place to go for
broke.
## Mandalay Bay was where Kali Meehan fought
Lamon Brewster for the WBO Heavyweight Title
in 2004.
