Gusher. Round four stoppage

THE cold and wet Melbourne weather was the
setting for Peter Maniatis's presentation of
the Bob Rose Cup at Malvern Town Hall on Friday
night, June 29. Scheduled for eight rounds,
Shannon McMahon, 67.2 kg, faced Fili Mailata,
67.5, in a main event that was basically a spar
for McMahon.
The only resistence offered by Mailata was
in the opening two minutes. After that it was
a matter of how long. McMahon stalked a tiring
opponent, who was showing little or no resistence.
It came as no surprise when McMahon decked Fili
in the second round and spreadeagled him in
round four. 9 - 10 and Out!
Promoter Peter who manages McMahon must disassociate
his friendship from his managerial chores and
be prepared to step Shannon up to the "Put
your head on the block" fights he is worthy
of.
Columban or Delic exclusively - he has had
enough stiffs.
In a six rounder Luke Maloney, 76.25 kg, decked
Bruce Glozier, 76.95, from New Zealand in the
second round, on the way to a clear points victory.
In a listed sixer, Jay Sims, 70.7 kg, against
Jean Claude, 67.45, an AHC (accidental head
cut) opened a bad cut over Jay’s eye and
brought a stoppage in round two. This has the
ingredients for a good rematch, it was getting
warmed up.
Another six rounder that didn’t last,
Kerey Palmer, 76.35 kg, boxed well and stuck
to the job in the face of real resistence from
Prince Hamid, 75.75. The Prince took Kerey to
task and landed a couple of big punches. But
Kerey never lost sight of the goal, asserted
himself in the fourth and stopped Hamid. Palmer
looks promising.
Also set for six rounds, Port Melbourne’s
Jonny Walker, 78.8 kg, fought Daniel Mc Kinnon
78.15 This was an evenly matched fight that
was really smoking.
Late in the third round, Mc Kinnon threw a
straight left followed by an uppercut. I thought
the uppercut missed Jon, but his nose began
to spurt blood. It gushed through the interval
. . a probable broken nose. And it was because
of this injury the bout was stopped shortly
into the 4th. This will make a good rematch
also. |
