End of the interim

IT looks as if Michael Katsidis can cast aside the “Interim” and declare himself the World Boxing Organisation lightweight champion, with NO modifications.

Acelino Freitas had first changed his mind about retiring as WBO holder, and then said he was not giving the belt up after all.

Now an announcement from the USA declares that Freitas has accepted a bigger apple. He is engaged to fight Juan Diaz on April 28 for the combined WBC-WBA lightweight titles.

When Katsidis hammered the British lightweight, Graham Earl in five rounds at Wembley on February 17- to decide the ‘Interim’ - Dave Wellings predicted that Mick’s crushing display would “seal Freitas’ retirement.”

In Acelino’s eyes a shot with Diaz could not look that much tougher. And it will carry many times the purse.

Be great to see Katsidis vie for the Undisputed Championship of the World.
