The Unsaid Truth

Great fights on the horizon

The rematch between Anthony Mundine and Sam Soliman on March 7, 2007 is a credit to how far both boxers have come since they first fought more than five years ago.

In that Wollongong fight on September 3, 2001, all three judges gave it by two points - Des Bloyd to Soliman, Don Marks and Brian McMahon to Mundine

Once the WBA raised Mikkel Kessler to super-champion for unifying the WBC belt as well, this all-Australian affair became for the vacant WBA Title.

Mikkel Kessler (38-0-29 KOs)will have his hands full when he defends his Super Super status - super champion at super-middleweight - against the WBC number one contender from Mexico, Librado Andrade (24-0-18 KOs). They fight in Denmark on March 24. Home Box Office looks like televising the fight in America, hope we get to see this awesome match-up in Australia as well.

Mundine and Soliman have really earned respect in the boxing world. Anthony's win over Danny Green proved to this country he could walk the walk, but his narrow loss to Kessler showed watchers round the world that he is one of the best in a division loaded with talent.

Sam Soliman positioned himself for the rematch by defeating Enrique Ornelas, now 25-3, who is the full brother of Librado Andrade. Soliman has defined his career with wins over well-credentialed opponents mostly away from home.

Losing to American superstar Winky Wright established the fact that Sam is not to be taken lightly by any fighter in the world. His awkward style has worked for him and against him, and at the end of the day he is a very hard man to beat.

This fight is very interesting, Mundine looks to be the favourite, being the more established super-middleweight. The form says "controversial ending." It would be impressive to see a clear cut winner. Time will tell.

Green vs Briggs?

Danny Green v Paul Briggs is a fight that needs to be the next Big Fight to happen in Australia. Both have fallen short in title fights overseas but the winner of this fight would surely generate the dollars to bring Champions.

It could be WBC Tomasz Adamek (31-0-21 KOs) Poland; WBO Zsolt Erdei (25-0-15 KOs) Hungary; IBF Clinton Woods (40-3-1- 24 KOs) England; or WBA Silvio Branco (55-8-2- 34 KOs) Italy, brought to Australia to face our best light-heavyweight of the era.

Big fights need to happen in Australia to help our country represent as a financial power in the boxing game as well as giving the best possible opportunity to boxers based here to be winners in and out of the ring.
