The biggest since Bond!

The Supermiddles
Settle! Danny Green versus Markus Beyer.
Perth's greatest sporting event since Alan Bond
brought the America's Cup yacht race to offshore
Perth in 1987.
It's a prospect that might
persuade the Western Australian State Government
to underwrite the Green Machine bid. Tourism
would boom and world prestige lift, if the great
return boxing match comes to the WA capital,
with at least two months to build it up world-wide.
Green's manager, Wayne Loxley
is hoping for a yes from WA Government next
week.
WBC interim champ Danny Green
travels with his dad, Malcolm and Jeff Fenech
to Mexico City to place his purse bid on 1 December,
against a German promoter.
Beyer's manager, Wilf Sauerland
has big bikkies to bid a purse to keep the contest
in the Fatherland.
Television broadcast would
cover Europe. Perhaps even the United States,
pick up the transmission live. If the Aussie
bid goes higher - guesstimates are around $2-2.5
million the shared purse - then the Perth team
would stage the match in our daytime to catch
the oversea market.
Daytime February in
Perth would be too hot for comfort. But a bout
in far Germany also raises unwelcome doubts
about points decisions. As everyone knows, Australian
judges do not give hometown nods.
Enter,

Anthony Mundine
|
Anthony Mundine
has flung an offer across the continent from
Sydney. One million dollars to Danny Green to
defend the WBC belt, once secured against Beyer.
This shift in readiness by
the Man follows the WBA title fight in Copenhagen
last week, where Anthony's conqueror, Manny
Siaca, lost his title in eight rounds to Mikkel
Kessler. The dynamite Dane scored his 35th straight
Victory.
Wayne Locksley said Green
would be glad to accommodate Mundine. In due
course. "We've a bigger picture,"
he said, "There are no obligations after
Beyer. We envisage Danny defending the WBC title
four or five times in Perth in the next two
years.
"We figure Anthony
has one big fight left, and that could be with
Danny Green next year."
SEEING Mundine will cop
a razz for his shift of stance, FOL sought a
kind word from small-screen boxing's best judge,
Barry Michael.
The Hall of Famer told FOL:
"That's good business of Mundine to look
for Green. Kessler would be as hard, and bring
him less money.
"Green v Mundine would
be a great fight, a 50:50 chance. Green to win
if he won inside seven rounds, . After that
he'd have punched himself out, missing, and
Mundine would take the points."
They'll
be predicting on that dream fight for another
year. Barry goes first.
