Henry Nissen

ERN McQUILLAN Studio

Henry Nissen faces a busy Sunday. Centre of attention this afternoon at the Victorian Trainers League annual presentation day at Maribyrnong. Guest speaker this evening at the opening of the Jewish Museum of Australia in St Kilda.

Our Enery has donated his champion boxer's royal regalia to the museum.

The flyweight world contender of the 1970s, Nissen bobs up on this website, a glitter in gold and purple trunks and gold boots with purple piping, one of the Famous Five upon the cover of the red Fighterbook 1973 annual, which was, all thing s considered, probably our finest product in the print years.

Adidas provided the magnificent ring wardrobe to Hammering Henry, piping purple stripes on the golden boots for the company emblem.

The same adidas good guy made Henry a second set of royal ringwear. Reversed the order, to mainly-purple trunks with gold stripe, purple boots with gold pipings.

"I never got to wear the second set . . they're the ones that are going in a glass cabinet in the Jewish Museum."

Together with his Australian flyweight title belt. And the certificate declaring Henry's OAM, Order of Australia Medal. For services to thousands of street kids.

In 1969, the twins Henry and Leon Nissen did Australian Jewry the honour of winning medals at the Maccabiah Games in Israel. Last night Hustling Henry remembered for FOL:

"Leon lost a robbery decision to an Israeli flyweight in the semi-finals. I was so angry, next up, I kayoed Israel's bantamweight in half a minute. He was counted out. I did it for my brother. The only time in my life I fought angry.
"In the bantamweight final, I belted a Jew from Italy, I hit him with everything. I felt so sorry for him .Afterwards."

One other Henry Nissen item goes in the Nissen exhibit in the Museum. His Nasho Medal.
National Service soldier 1970-71, Private Nissen served in the Artillery then as PT Instructor at four Army bases. As PTI, he went 15 rounds to Australian flyweight title in third pro bout. What a warrior.
