LETIM MISS. Samoan boxer, Leti E Leti moves inside Joel Brunker's left with a blast

Leti again outmoves the Aussie Olympian

Bendigo, Wednesday -

Sydney bantamweight Davey Browne sent Australia off to a flying start in the Commonwealth Youth Games Boxing at West Bendigo Stadium this afternoon.
In the opening bout of the series, the lanky 18 year old outboxed Desmond Samuels from South Africa over four rounds, keeping the small bustler on the end of his long punches.

England's Liam Walsh was the best of the other bantam quarter-finals, stopping Rishi Singh of India on the whistle round two.

Carl Frampton of Northern Ireland beat Angus Donaldson of New Zealand 15-8, and back-mover Jason Hastie of Scotland took the points from Tusia Taala of Samoa.

On Monday NSW State matchmaker Paul Towell tipped FOL that Leonardo (Lenny) Zappavigna was "Australia's best prospect." Sydney lightweight Lenny duly zapped an Indian boxer, single name Feroz, with powerful blows from interesting angles to win on the whistle in round three.

The highly hyped English welterweight, Ryan Pickard flopped in his
69kg match with one-name Indian, Virender. Besides being warned and docked twice for holding, Pickard was slung to the mat twice. He looked lackadaisical and fell below all expectations, though announced winner 13-8.

"I thought Pickard lost," said the amateur boxing doyen, Joe Bridges of Adelaide. "He disappointed."

Sources close to the England camp said Ryan Pickard had lost form since he won the World Championship Cadet silver medal a year ago.

The tourney which runs again in the evening session was great value at $10 a ticket covering both sessions.

Samoa's rugby team musically improved on the blaring sound
system of rock songs, by a chant and rhythmic clapping for their welterweight Ken Titali against Keve Tukia of Cook Island. They took his close loss as good sports, when both boxers rocked each other through all four rounds in a fight that will be hard to beat as the best fight in the coming nights.

Australia's featherweight from Athens Olympics Joel Brunker boxed off-form to win a questionable featherweight decision over Leti Emilio Leti of Samoa in the evening session.
