Rocky comes home

By Dave Wellings

'Rocky’ Katsidis

After several televised appearances in Sydney, Michael ‘Rocky’ Katsidis returns to his home town Toowoomba on Saturday, 6 November to fight for the vacant IBF Pan-Pacific lightweight title.
Sergio Liendo of the Argentine, the Trans-Continental super-featherweight champion, brings with him the experience of 88 paid bouts.

Katsidis is rated at #8 by the WBO (he holds their version of the Pacific). But his record of 13-0 (11 KOs) pales into insignificance beside the 62-20-3 (31) of the 34-year-old South American..

Liendo has swapped leather with the likes of Prince Naseem Hamed, Derrick Gainer, Jorge Barrios and world-rated South African, Cassius Baloyi.

Promoter Brendan Smith said he had hoped to match Katsidis with Ben Cruz and a tentative date had been agreed for a showdown with the two rising lightweights as a televised main event in Sydney.

A much larger venue is being tried for Katsidis-Liendo - the Clive Berghoffer Recreation Centre at the University of Southern Queensland - and if this is a success, Toowoomba fans could be seeing a lot more of their local hero.
