Kali Meehan's
Next Foe

by Mike C Ryan

Kali Meehan

Kali Meehan's next fight in America, he meets an even bigger name than Lamon Brewster. - Hasim Rahman!

Rahman knocked out Lennox Lewis to win the WBC heavyweight championship in 2001. He lost it back to Lennox, the last universal champion.

Rahman (pronounced Rakman) faces the Australasian fighter, Kali Meehan in Madison Square Garden, New York City on 13 November, as part of Don King's unofficial tournament to unify the heavyweight title.

In the triple card at MSG - unlucky 13th for some - John Ruiz defends the WBA title against Andrew Golota. And Chris Byrd defends the IBF title against Jameel McCline.

Seeing the WBO heavyweight title is immobilised due to Lamon Brewster's crushed cheekbone - six months, his manager told FOL - there's a buzz circulating that the Australian connections should ask the Organisation to tag the Meehan-Rahman match an Interim WBO heavyweight title.**

Only the WBC titleholder, Vitali Klitschko is outside the Don King network at present.

The Ukrainian Hulk will come under huge pressure to meet whichever of the Don King heavyweights emerges wearing the other three belts in 2005.

That could be our Kali!

** The WBO interim winner would, of course, settle the rule with Brewster once Lamon was back on deck.

It's like Markus Beyer. He never ceased to be WBC super-middleweight champion while he was sidelined by facial injuries and Danny Green was interim champion.

Danny Green remains interim champ; Cristian Sinavia is 'the' champion, after beating Beyer.
