The glove that binds

P&P Club thrives at 66

Past & Present Club secretary, Mario Magris, throws a comradely arm around Lionel Rose, who has been through hard times recently.

The fight fraternity of the State of Victoria met on 5 December for the 66th year, to ensure the bonds created in honest and honourable combat stayed firm.

The Past & Present Boxers Club of Victoria was founded in 1939 by George Harrod, ring name Young Knuckler.

The venerable club met at various Melbourne West side halls, and this year's Sunday set gathered, 250 strong and straitened by a sprinkle of ladies, in a spacious room of the Footscray Football Club, these days the Australian Football League's Western Bulldogs.

The boxing veterans awarded middleweight, Sam Soliman Victorian fighter of the year. They gave the most improved cup, the Norm Foster Memorial named for a grand brother of old, to flyweight, Shane Brock.

Into the Club's Hall of Fame in the wake of the original Jack Carroll and Ambrose Palmer were inducted three stalwarts on the club organising side, Mario Magris, Alan Fagan and Mal Ivory, plus middleweight great, Peter Read.

The occasion brought Mario Magris and Lionel Rose together to salute the 40th anniversary of their meeting inside the ropes.
Lionel made his professional debut in 1964 against Mario at Warragul near hometown Drouin. The Gippsland glow boy was 16. Lionel won the eight-rounder on points.

KID KALIN gets shots of the fighting fellowship

Henry Nissen, OAM and the P&P treasurer, Mal Ivory. Hustling Henry brings great good humour.

Henry Nissen and Paul Ferreri twice shared a FIGHTER cover . . and entirely occupied others.

Bryan Membrey used his long right lead to shake the hand of P & P bulwark, Hank Stanley. Leo Firpo, flyweight of the 1940s, is in the pink.

The Membreys lead the Australian Boxing Federation in Victoria. Damien secretary, his dad, Bryan, president.

GLEN Walsh is kept in fighting trim by his wife. 'Whipper' Walsh was Viccie bantam champ
22 years ago. His nickname, based on whipcord build and lashing blows, has passed to an England rep bantamweight, Liam Walsh.

Shane Brock happy to meet John Famechon. Shane hugs the Norm Foster Memorial Award, for most improved. Forty years ago nimble John won its forerunner cup, when matchmaker/scribe Norm Foster, now passed, was present at the already long established P&P club gatherings.

Good scrappers in their day. Young Victor Aquilina, Mick Croucher and Archie Bryant reached top of the card in an era when men were men.

Order prints Werner Kalin Ph.03 9743 3925.
